In front of ruined monuments of ancient Rome - the Temple of Minerva, Trajan's Column - Christ consigns the keys of the kingdom of heaven to St Peter. This miniature painting, formerly attributed to Giulio Clovio, may refer to a project designed by Michelangelo c. 1542 for the Cappella Paolina in the Vatican, but never executed.
